Hot or Disturbing?

This past week I did my first free promotion on Amazon, giving away His Obsession, Her Submission.

I looked over on the Amazon UK site and noticed they listed four reviews. Three of them were four-star, and one was a two-star.

I wasn’t really upset that the reader disliked the story – and that she found some elements of the story especially uncomfortable.

I don’t know about other erotica authors, but the focus of my stories isn’t necessarily to get the reader hot. I want to make readers think – push their limits, make them ask questions about their own sexuality and what they find uncomfortable.

I’ve even had a few readers say they really enjoyed a specific story – yet point out it was a bit lacking in the erotica. The Raperbeast series was a bit like that.  When writing that story, my intent was not to get the reader all worked up over the idea of having sex with the raperbeast – the story was really about the manipulation of women, and exploiting their fears.

When you read my stories – don’t assume I think the characters’ actions are necessarily acceptable.

Free Erotica - Free eBook - Today and Friday!

It was a great summer, and you might have noticed, I wasn't around much. Just too much fun stuff to do outdoors. Of course, it is always summer in Hawaii!

But I am back to work - and I have a new book that I decided to put on Amazon's Select program. I was curious how giving away free books help a writer. Consider this an experiment.

If you click on the book cover, you can go to Amazon and order His Obsession, Her Submission Free today and Friday.

What is the story about?

Since high school, wealthy, powerful Daniel Stoddard’s one obsession was to possess Kristy Collins as his submissive. He now has the power to take what he wants.

When Kristy goes to her high school reunion, she expects to see geeky Danny Stoddard – the brainy kid with severe acne, who looked years younger than his classmates. While she knew he was now successful and rich, she had no idea he had grown into an incredibly handsome and sexy man, who isn’t shy about taking what he wants. What he wants is Kristy.

Breeding Erotica

Breeding Stock is one of my newer stories. It is a fanciful historic erotica, where our lovely young virgin is taken by pirates and sold on the auction block, to be used as breeding stock.

Such a sweet and naughty tale.

Remember, you can find my eBooks at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Smashwords - along with a variety of other eBook sites, such as Sony and iTune.

If you find one, yet not all of my eBooks at your eBook vendor's site, chances are my other books are on the way, and will be there soon.

Happy reading!

Top 100 Erotica at Amazon

I am proud to say my story, Breeding the Princess has made the top 100 list under erotica over at Amazon - in Books and the Kindle Store.

I've three reviews, all over the place. Two four stars, and one one star.

It was interesting, because one of the four star reviews and the one star both came from reviewers familiar with my work, and who've given me favorable reviews. The one star pretty much thought the story sucked, while the four star claimed to love the story and characters.

The other four star was rather interesting. She pointed out there were a few minor errors in the story. She wrote " none of them amounted to more than minor annoyances." Well, I do apologize for those errors. This morning I reedited the book and just finished reloading the files on the various sites. The new file is already on Smashwords, yet will probably take 24 hours before it shows up on Barnes and Noble and Amazon. It usually takes a week or so before the other sites get the corrected file.

The reviewer which pointed out the errors, called it a "Surprisingly Sweet" story and wrote "Overall this is an enjoyable read, which is somewhere between erotica and erotic romance. It has less sex and more tenderness than most erotica, despite the harsh premise of the story."

But the reviewer also noted that if she had the ability, she would have docked the score 1/2 star for the minor errors, and the fact she felt the description was misleading. She also considered the ending rushed, whereas the other four star review didn't feel the ending was rushed.

I would like my reviewers to know I really appreciate your honest reviews - even those that take me to task. And I understand not all stories will appeal to all readers. If just one reader loves my story, I am tickled. Of course, there is no excuse to let the errors stand, so I do apologize for those, and hope I caught them all.

Thanks! Maggie

Love Me or Hate Me

In my last post I discussed how a reviewer loved my story, Masked. Sadly, the same reviewer rather hated my newest (and most popular) story, Breeding the Princess.

Tasty Cake wrote, "this was a really stupid dull story this was a waste of money the ending was awful this was one of the worst books ive read in a while"     Ouch.

I might be feeling really awful about now, except for an earlier reviewer I received from  MidnightAtticReader, who wrote: "An imaginative short story with a sweet ending. I loved the characters! The idea for this story could have been used for a much longer, full-length story, but I felt the story was nicely encapsulated as it is, without feeling rushed. Nice quick read."

I would like to point out, I do not know these two reviewers, nor have I ever contacted them, other than mentioning them on this blog. Both have reviewed more than one of my stories.

My feelings aren't hurt nor am I annoyed with Tasty Cake, because I totally get how my stories will not appeal to all readers. I think this is especially true with erotica.

I have a friend who reads my stories - yet I try to guide her to specific titles, that I think she will like. She happened to love Breeding the Princess, yet I am fairly sure she would hate The Bargain - which happened to receive a five star over on Goodreads. Also from a reviewer who I do not know personally, nor have ever contacted.

Remember - you can find my most recent titles at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords. Smashwords distributes them to other eBook venders, such as Sony and Apple, yet there is often a lag.

Recent Reader Reviews

This morning I discovered a very flattering 5 star review for one of my recent releases, Masked.

The reviewer wrote: this was a hot sexy read I am so tired about reading about girls losing their virginity than turning into sluts but not this girl she was a little confused about her life but she changed and she found love. i really liked this if i could give it 10 stars i would.

Her handle (assuming it is a female) is “tasty cake.” It sounded familiar, so I looked at some of her other reviews, and realized she reviewed one of my other books, Carter’s Niece, also leaving a 5 star. I was very flattered.

Before my head got too big, I came across a recent one star review for my book Master’s Virgin Slut.

That reviewer wrote: Short tale about a girl who becomes a sex slave. First, I don't like BDSM books. However, I do enjoy a little bit of force and seduction in my romance tales. Well, there is nothing romantic or even sexy about this one. And I wouldn't really classify this as erotica either because the sex just wasn't that good.

I’m not too upset. I totally get how a reader looking for a romantic sexy tale would be unsatisfied with Master’s Virgin Slut. Some of my stories are heavier on the romance than others. Those who don’t get their buttons pushed with total submission and humiliation should avoid Master’s Virgin Slut. My stories with more romance include: Breeding Jenna, Breeding the Princess, While She Slept, The Widow and One Time Call Girl – to mention a few.

Breeding Jenna

It is interesting how some stories just take off like wildfire. This past weekend I released my newest book, Breeding Jenna. It is an erotic tale of a man determined to force his stepsister to marry him.

It is selling well at Amazon, Smashwords and Barnes and Noble - selling immediately after it hit the cyber bookshelves.

Unlike some of my darker - more brutal tales - this one is bittersweet.

The story begins after the Civil War. James hates his stepfather, Ben Parker, and for good reason - but after James' mother dies, Parker needs his stepson's help, and persuades him to stay by offering up the ranch.

Years pass - the stepfather dies - yet the old man double crosses his stepson, and leaves the ranch to James' stepsister, Jenna Parker.

One way James can get the ranch is to marry Jenna, but she is not cooperative. James then decides he'll force the issue by putting a baby in her belly - which he is determined to do, even if he has to tie her up.

Look for Breeding Jenna at your eBook store.

Vampire Sex

Some writers experience writer's block - I get creative overload. I walked away from my western to complete the Barhaven's Vampire Trilogy, which has been haunting my psyche for some time.

The trilogy is available in eBook format. They are all available at Smashwords. You will find the first two in the series at Amazon, with the third popping up by tomorrow. I've published all three at Barnes and Noble, yet none are yet showing up.  Other eBook venues, such as Apple, should get the books in a few weeks, because I use Smashwords distribution for those sites.

Begin with Seduction, which tells the story of Caroline Barhaven who returns to her family home, only to discover she is hunted by two vampires - for  two different reasons.

The second of the series is Lust, which tells of Caroline's dark journey of sexual adventure - where pleasure and pain becomes one.

The final book in the series is Surrender, where Caroline learns to master her new gifts, while surrendering to her new life as a Creature of Lust.

The story won't end there. I am planning a fourth book, which is not part of the trilogy, but tells the story of the Demon Victor and Vampire Seri.

For all you erotic vampire fans out there, I hope you enjoy the books!

Saving Summer
Edited by PayPal

Yesterday, I published my most recent eBook – Saving Summer. I will confess, the writing of this story was influenced by PayPal’s recent censoring of erotica. I made a business decision, to keep the book out of banned territory, so I could publish it at Smashwords.

It rather pisses me off that I have to consider PayPal’s demands when writing a story.

Saving Summer is about a woman who is kidnapped by slave traders.

Actually, I started the story long before the PayPal situation. But, I did a significant rewrite, taking the story in another direction. Had the story been finished prior to the censorship fiasco, it would have contained some rape scenes. Does that make me a despicable person? Yes, the slave trade is a horrible industry – and in this story, those bad guys are dealt with.

But the fact is, women do have rape fantasies. It doesn’t mean women actually want to get raped, or condone RL rape. Some psychologists suggest that the rape fantasy is one way women deal with sex and guilt, after all, if someone takes control and forces you to like it, you have relinquished your responsibility.

Whatever the reason, it is a harmless mental fantasy, and many women enjoy reading erotic stories about such things. Of course, PayPal apparently knows what is best for us women.

Aren’t we lucky they care so much about us?

UPDATE: PayPal did some soul searching, and decided not to play censor. Thank you PayPal. I've since republished the books at Smashwords, that I removed because of the censorship.

Paypal, Censorship
and Sexual Titillation

I have a question. Just what is wrong with sexual titillation?

From what I understand, the current ban goes against the erotica genre, and erotica by definition sexually arouses.

So, while it is okay to include rape, bestiality and incest in a slasher murder book, where the characters get slaughtered, apparently making people depressed and grossed out is fine – but getting a little turned on is bad?

I don’t get it. When I get turned on, I seduce my husband, which he seems to like and is good for our marriage.

But if I get depressed, I just might knock him over the head with the toaster if he pisses me off.

So depressed is good, turned on is bad?

And folks, it is possible to write steaming and not sick erotica using those topics.

Take rape. Okay, we will all admit that rape is bad thing. But we are talking fiction here. Women have rape fantasies. Typically those fantasies involve hunky looking men who force us to experience the forbidden pleasure that society tells us is bad.

But we flipping know it is FICTION, a fantasy. We aren’t asking to get raped in the parking lot by some smuck. Let us have our fiction!!!

As for bestiality – I imagine those shape shifters that are so popular now might get a little horny. And really folks, as I said, it is FICTION.

And for the incest, what harm is a book where consenting adults get it on? While I admit the father daughter, and even a step-father daughter thing grosses me out, but what is the big frick’n deal with non-blood relatives or even cousins? Many cousins marry. Heck, I had a great-uncle who married his aunt!

I don’t understand a society that defends the purchase of assault rifles, in spite of the tragic school shootings – yet feel it is okay to ban fiction that might turn someone on and spice up the sex life.

PayPal Censorship,
is it really all about Genre?

When Smashword’s founder, Mark Coker sent out his censorship letter the other day, telling erotic writers certain topics must be pulled from his cyber bookshelf, or he’d risk PayPal’s wrath, he included bestiality, rape and incest to his already enforced taboo, underage sex.

The ongoing blog debate and discussion concerning the recent PayPal censorship hammer that came down on a number of online booksellers, raised several points.

On one side, are those that insist private companies have the right to censor who they do business with, while others feel this is overreaching and an abuse of corporate power. An angry online community cries for boycotting PayPal, while others say good ridden to bad rubbish.

Some insist the forbidden list is just icky, and who wants to read that stuff anyway? Others point out that those topics are included in accepted books, such as the Bible.

When Lot’s daughters decide to get him drunk and seduce him, so they can become pregnant and carry on his line, we have incest, nonconsensual sex, and possibly underage sex. I don’t recall the age of the daughters.

As for bestiality, just think of all the popular werewolf stories on the market.

Of course, the real taboo: purpose for sexual titillation. While you might argue Paypal can’t get into the head of the writer and prove the writer penned those words for the purpose of titillation, you might want to consider the genre.

The basic definition of erotica is art that arouses sexually. Generally, the difference between erotica and pornography is that erotica isn’t written primarily for sexual arousal – it has a plotline and character development. Of course, that is where the subjective judgment comes into play. What one critic sees as a literary masterpiece with in-depth character development, another sees as smut.

Perhaps the answer is to simply, switch genres.

I don’t see anyone pulling Pirate’s Love off the bookshelf. It was written by bestselling author, Johanna Lindsey and begins with the pirate raping a young innocent. Of course, you will find her books in the romance section.

In Tarzan, there is a scene where one of the apes takes off with Jane, to make her his mate. Can we say bestiality?

Did the authors include those parts to titillate? Since the books aren’t in the erotica section, only the writer knows for sure.

There are countless *acceptable* stories out there that include taboo content, they just aren’t in the erotica section.

Perhaps we simply need to rethink the genre.

Carter’s Niece is a western.

Legend of the Raperbeast – along with half a dozen of my books are science fiction.

A couple of my stories are romances.

If I kill off a couple of my characters in the other books, those can go in the murder mystery section.

See…I fixed the problem. Now, is everyone happy?

Time for a Confession

With Smashwords caving to Paypal’s censorship, I have decided to come out of the closet – so to speak.

I take my first amendment rights very seriously, and I don’t feel comfortable discussing such a vital subject while draped in a fog of fiction.

First, Sam is my husband, not my boyfriend. Actually, he has been my husband for many, many, many years. Yet that doesn’t sound near as sexy as a boyfriend. Most of the other Sam stuff is pretty much the truth, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent – and not so innocent.

Another fiction – I don’t have a brother or stepbrother. My blog post on the subject was an extension of my fiction.

I’ve done a lot of thinking about my erotica, and the Paypal lockdown. I’ve temporarily removed some of my stories from Smashwords, as they fall in a gray area.

Erotica by definition is art that arouses. I can’t imagine the courts ever deeming my stories pornography, as I pride myself on plot and character development. Yet, there will always be people out there that would call it pornography.

Since the Paypal decree, I’ve been surfing the blogs, reading what other erotica writers have to say on the subject. I was startled at how so many of them expressed feelings I didn’t even know I had.

I don’t just write erotica – yet of all my writing, I believe writing erotica has taught me the most about myself, and the world around me. It is a safe haven where I can explore my deepest fears and desires.

Those closest to me know I write erotica, yet I only share my pen name with my husband and a few other people, and he is the only one of my circle who is allowed to read my stories. One friend asked for my erotica pen name, and I told her I believed I am a more open, freer writer when I don’t have to worry about those around me judging my writing, yet that doesn’t mean they aren’t fully aware of what I am up to.

With each story I write, I discover something new about myself, through the thoughts and experiences of my characters.

Writing erotica has also punched up our sex life - seriously. My husband is a VERY happy man these days, and I am a very satisfied woman. For women, sex starts in the head, and writing erotic doesn't just get my creative juices flowing.

I totally disagree with Rick Santorum that sex is all about procreation. If that were true, God would fix it so women would loose their ability to have orgasms after they go through the change. Trust me Rick, that ain't so. A healthy and active sex life helps foster a more solid and closer relationship between spouses - of any gender.

I hope the other players, like Amazon, don’t follow Paypal’s lead. I’d be all for an adult section at Amazon, to keep explicit covers from young readers. Yet, other than a separate section, I am opposed to censorship.

PayPal - The Internet Censor

I just received the email from Smashwords, informing contributors we must remove erotica stories with specific story lines - such as rape and incest.

I couldn't help but think of several books I've read by mainstream romance writer, Johanna Lindsey, where the leading man rapes the leading lady. One I recall involved a pirate, another was a viking raider.

I went ahead and removed about 5 of my titles, as I'm not sure which ones cross the Paypal line, and I don't want to put Smashwords in jeopardy, as Paypal can do some nasty damage to the company.

For now, look for my books at Amazon, yet not sure what will happen to my books there and at Barnes and Noble.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised - not when GOP contenders for the presidency are talking about making birth control illegal and Rick Santorum insist sex is just for having babies.

Even if you don't read erotica, this censorship and political shift is chilling.

Legend of the Raperbeast,
Portal Home

The Legend of the Raperbeast is my best seller. It is a twisted erotic tale of a Alison, who falls into anther world and is forced to mate with the terrifying raperbeast - a man-like creature that needs a willing woman to reproduce.

The story is actually a metaphor for how civilization has treated women throughout the years.

I have decided to tell the rest of Alison's story and what happens to her when she is given the chance to escape the raperbeast. Of course, she can't escape the beasts completely, as they've accomplished what they've set out to do by impregnating her. They've also accomplished their second goal - they've turned her into a Myra, which is a woman who is sexually insatiable.

She finds she will do anything to get what she craves, even if it means returning to the raperbeast and being their beast-slut.

You can read about it in "The Legend of the Rapberbeast, Portal Home."

Cost of Doing Business

I met a writer at a recent book fair I attended, and we started talking about Smashwords, one of the distributors I use for my eBooks. This particular writer refuses to use Smashwords, because she doesn't want them taking a percentage of her sales, plus she resents the fact you aren't allowed to sell the files they create on your own website.

While I would make more money publishing directly to Barnes and Noble, like I do for Amazon, I don't really resent the portion Smashwords keeps. After all, there is a cost of doing business. Plus, I don't blame Smashwords for being pissy about using their software to create an  eBook file, and then sell it elsewhere, without compensating Smashwords. That seems fair to me, plus it is not that difficult to create a file to submit to the other venues.

If you want to sell files directly from your website or blog, there is always Tradebit. Of course, they also expect a percentage.

After all, there is a cost of doing business, and there are no free rides.

Hmmm...free ride....sounds kinda erotic.

Voyeur or Just Lazy?

Sometimes I write late into the night and Sam goes to bed several hours before me. When writing erotica, I get a little…..well horny.

So I asked Sam the other day: Sam, when I go to bed late, and you are already sleeping should I just take care of myself, or do you want me to wake you?

His response?

Please, wake me…and let me watch you take care of yourself.

Talk about lazy! LOL

When a Sexual Submissive Goes Online to Find a Master

My newest book, Internet Master was actually written about eleven years ago, back in the day when I spent a lot of time surfing through BDSM chat rooms and participating in online role playing.

Back in the day there were some interesting chat rooms over at Yahoo, one I enjoyed was the Rape Room.  Not especially politically correct, but I actually met some nice folks, and I know of a few that went on to meet in real life.

I stopped going to the chat rooms when they started enabling voice chat - as I really liked the text chat for role playing. Voice chat was too intrusive, IMO.

I learned something very interesting in the Rape Room -  female rape fantasy is definitely VERY different from real rape and the rape fantasy of many men out there.

In the old days, two chatters could create a scene - with one person writing his part and the other writing her part. It was like writing erotica, yet I was only able to write my character's part, and had no control over what happened to my character by the other writer.

I soon learned some of the other "Writers" wanted to do some pretty disgusting stuff, such as pee or shit on the other person, as they were forcing the person to submit. As I mentioned earlier, not my thing. If I ever came across a writer who took the story that way, my character suddenly got super powers, and ended up kicking his butt.

The story of Internet Master was inspired by my experiences in the sex chat rooms. And you may notice the writing style is a bit different from how I write today - but I only made minor changes before publishing. It is already at Smashwords, and should be at Amazon by this weekend.

I hope you enjoy the story.

Is Whatever Her Stepbrother Wants biographical?

Biographical? Kinda – sorta. I will confess my stepbrother nailed me at our family’s mountain cabin, under similar circumstances – yet our encounter was a one week thing – nothing quite as torrid as what happens to my female character in the story.

And yes, I was 18 at the time. He really did take my virginity as in the story – and like the character, he gave me the chance to say no, which I declined.

You have to understand, he and I never lived with each other – he was always my older stepbrother that I was crushing on – and I suppose I have him to thank for my writing career. My first erotic stories were all about him.

He really was pissed when he found my stories. Actually, the reason he was going through my stuff while I was in the shower (something I don’t mention in the story) was that he thought I was smoking pot with my friends, and he was looking for my stash! LOL

Ironically, it was my father who asked my stepbrother to go up to the cabin a week early, to check on me, to make sure I didn’t get into any trouble. Dad had no idea his stepson would be initiating his innocent daughter – breaking me in a not so gentle fashion.

Actually – the part of the story that takes place at the cabin is very factual. Yet, I don’t think he actually wanted to get me pregnant, but he did refuse to wear a condom.

What does Sam think about my dear stepbrother? He rather likes him.

Looking For Romance

Admittedly my stories tend to go with the Dom and Submissive theme - often taking my characters to the dark side.

Yet, I resisted going that way in my most recent release, One Time Call Girl.  I actually started the manuscript over ten years ago, and found it when cleaning out my files. I decided to finish the story, and avoided the temptation to turn my leading man into a Dom who holds down his sub as he takes her forcibly up the ass.

The characters in this story are a bit more gentle - yet the scenes are still steamy.

The story is about Andrea Mitchell, a feature writer for the local newspaper who befriends an infamous madam while doing a story. Like many woman, one of Andrea's secret fantasies is to be a call girl, servicing the needs of some sexy and wealthy hunk.

Andrea has been a widow for about a year, when our story begins - and the last time she had sex was with her husband. Her friend, the madam, makes her an offer to earn some extra money while acting out her secret sexual fantasy.

The potential client is hard to resist, and Andrea accepts the deal. The week with her client doesn't turn out as anyone expects - yet there are no regrets.

I've a Thing for Butts

When I have spare time, I like to read the free erotica short stories over on Smashwords. It is interesting to see how other writers approach erotica. As the old clich̩ says Рdifferent strokes for different folks.

You won’t find my characters wearing diapers, indulging in golden showers or sitting at the bottom of an outhouse waiting to glimpse some lovely, preparing to use the facility. I find nothing sexy about potty play so I can’t write about it.

While I will venture into the step-brother and step-sister sex, and step-mom and step-son – I have difficulty writing about the daddy daughter tryst. I just can’t go there, yet there are plenty of writers that do, so readers who want that type of erotica will find lots available.

Of course, I do have a step-brother who is quite hot...and there was this one time we kinda sorta did it. Well, to be honest, there was nothing sorta about it. He nailed me once during a summer vacation at our family's mountain cabin. When I say nailed, I mean he was pretty forceful about the whole thing....but in was my fault...hmmmm....perhaps that will be the storyline in my next story.

I do find my stories tend to lean toward the dominate-submissive storyline…and heavy on the anal…not sure where all that is coming from. :)

My Lusty Ghost

Ghosts aren’t just scary – some ghosts are sexy and horny, like the ghost in my recent book, Haunting Sarah.

Charles Cadbury may be dead, but he still has sexual needs, and he has every intention of sating those needs on the young woman who just purchased his house.

Don’t feel too sorry for Sarah;   she finds her haunting most pleasurable.

Free Erotica

Three days ago I decided to post a free erotica story on Smashwords. Today I got my first review on the free article.

The reviewer wrote: A near perfect piece of erotica. Loved the language, the dialogue, the action. Only wish it had been a bit longer - that we hadn't left them so soon.

The reviewer was another Smashwords writer, Jessa Callaver. I haven't read her work, but I will need to. A very flattering review. Thank you.

What is Your Sexual Fantasy?

Erotica isn’t the only type of writing I do professionally. It is just the only writing I keep secret. Shhhhh….please don’t tell.

Of course, my boyfriend, Sam, knows I write erotica, in fact, he is one of my biggest fans. Some erotica appeals more to men, some to women. I try to write stories that appeal to both men and women. They aren’t Harlequin type erotica – the language is more graphic – yet not porn, the language is not that crude. Well, perhaps some people would consider it crude.

My stories are available in eBook format. You can find them at Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the iBook Store.

Do you have a secret fantasy, a story line you would love to read about? Send me an email and let me know what turns you on and I’ll try and write a story to fulfill your fantasy.

Write to me at maggiechatterley@yahoo.com
